European West Coast atmospheric rivers: A scale to characterize strength and impacts

چکیده

Abstract This manuscript applies the recently-created atmospheric river intensity and impacts scale (AR Scale) to European continent. The AR Scale uses an Eulerian perspective based solely upon time series of integrated vapor transport (IVT) over a given geographic location (often represented by model or reanalysis “grid cell”). assigns events with persistent, strong IVT at that one five levels (AR1 AR5), if is too weak short-lived it determined not be AR. AR1 are primarily beneficial, AR2, 3 4 include mix beneficial hazardous impacts, while AR5s hazardous. frequency occurrence, associated probability anomalous precipitation amount explained each rank provided across Europe for extended winter season (from October through March). AR2 most frequent explain observed precipitation, but they low extreme rainfall. Although AR3, AR4 AR5 much less frequent, normally provide smaller fraction annual high These results show remarkable variability among different regions also provides detection catalog period 1980–2019, simplified version algorithm used from AR5.

Atmospheric Rivers as Drought Busters on the U.S. West Coast

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) have, in recent years, been recognized as the cause of the largemajority of major floods in rivers all along the U.S. West Coast and as the source of 30%–50% of all precipitation in the same region. The present study surveys the frequencywith whichARs have played a critical role as a common cause of the end of droughts on the West Coast. This question was based on the o...

Meteorological Characteristics and Overland Precipitation Impacts of Atmospheric Rivers Affecting the West Coast of North America Based on Eight Years of SSM/I Satellite Observations

The pre-cold-frontal low-level jet within oceanic extratropical cyclones represents the lower-tropospheric component of a deeper corridor of concentrated water vapor transport in the cyclone warm sector. These corridors are referred to as atmospheric rivers (ARs) because they are narrow relative to their length scale and are responsible for most of the poleward water vapor transport at midlatit...

Atmospheric rivers: a mini-review

*Correspondence: Luis Gimeno, EPhyslab, Departamento de Física Aplicada, Universidad de Vigo, Campus As Lagoas, 32004 Ourense, Spain e-mail: [email protected] Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are narrow regions responsible for the majority of the poleward water vapor transport across the midlatitudes. They are characterized by high water vapor content and strong low level winds, and form a part of the ...

Seasonal variability of methane in the rivers and lagoons of Ivory Coast (West Africa)

We report a data-set of dissolved methane (CH4) in three rivers (Comoé, Bia and Tanoé) and five lagoons (Grand-Lahou, Ebrié, Potou, Aby and Tendo) of Ivory Coast (West Africa), during the four main climatic seasons (high dry season, high rainy season, low dry season and low rainy season). The surface waters of the three rivers were over-saturated in CH4 with respect to atmospheric equilibrium (...
